                                                             Claire Coté

Born and raised in Northern New Mexico, Claire  has recently returned to her home state to live with her new husband in Sunshine Valley. Claire graduated with honors from the University of New Mexico in 2004 with degrees in Fine Art and Cultural Anthropology. In 2008 she finished her Masters degree in Fine Art and Ecology at Dartington College of Arts in Devon, England. To visit her travel blog from her time in England click here.

In her work, Claire walks the tightrope of the artist,  educator, anthropologist and activist.   She explores environments, people and their relationships through experimentation in many mediums including drawing, painting, sound, book-making, collage and photography. Her commitment to social change and environmental sustainability as well as a fascination with the human experience inspire her work.

Collaboration plays an important part in much of Claire's work. In 2007 she began collaborating with Anna Keleher, from Devon, England. Their participatory project, "Approaching an Exchange" made its debut in the United States at the University of New Mexico Art Gallery in August 2009.
And their traveling residency, DREAMING PLACE, took place in Northern Ireland/ Eîre in June and July 2011. Claire has also collaborated with the National Park Service, US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to create artworks and events. Her interactive, interpretive installation, “If You’d Like To…. Great Sand Dunes” (fifth in a series begun in Dartmoor National Park, England with Collaborator, Anna Keleher), was installed at the Great Sand Dunes National Park Visitor Center in Colorado during the summer and fall of 2010.

Claire began her business Claire Cote Concepts in the spring of 2006 to make her creations available to a broader audience. Claire is Outreach and Programs coordinator for Rivers & Birds, a local environmental education organization and she a board member for Localogy and the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance.

Claire is also daughter of the North Star Elves. To see North Star Toys online click here.
